Quartz stone is a new type of stone material made by using 92% quartz sand powder as the primary aggregate and 8% resin, pigments, and other auxiliary materials as the main binding agents. After mixing, it undergoes vacuum‑pressing and vibration molding, followed by curing and polishing, resulting in a durable, environmentally friendly, and recyclable building and decorative material that is free from radioactive contamination.

Thanks to its high density and exceptional hardness, quartz stone boasts outstanding scratch resistance and stain resistance: it resists scratching, prevents liquid penetration, withstands stains, resists corrosion, tolerates high temperatures, is environmentally friendly, and can come into direct contact with food.

However, from a physics perspective, quartz stone exhibits slight thermal expansion and contraction, resulting in inherent shrinkage stresses, impact toughness, fracture elongation, and other mechanical properties. When the material cannot withstand the internal stresses induced by thermal cycling or is subjected to severe external impacts, cracking will occur.

Cracking of Quartz Stone Countertops: Causes and Contributing Factors

1. Cracking in the center of the countertop, etc.: caused by high temperatures, external impact, an uneven cabinet or support board, or internal defects in the panel material, among other factors.

2. Cracking at corners: caused by the countertop being installed too close to the wall without a contraction joint, uneven height between two cabinets or inadequate leveling, external impact, or uneven thermal expansion and contraction of the countertop due to temperature changes.

3. Cracking around the rim of a vessel sink: This can occur when there is no gap between the sink and the countertop opening, when the opening has not been smoothly polished, or when the countertop is subjected to external impact or experiences uneven contraction due to temperature changes.

4. Cracking around the burner opening: This can occur when there is no gap between the gas stove and the burner opening, when the burner opening has not been smoothly ground, or when the countertop cracks due to external impact or uneven contraction caused by temperature changes.

5. Cracking of the rear waterstop: caused by an uneven cabinet or improperly leveled shims.

6. Cracking at the joint between the rear waterstop and the countertop: adhesive bond is insufficient.

7. Cracking at the joints of the countertop: During installation, if the joint gaps are misaligned, the adhesive is not applied evenly, or excessive curing agents or accelerators are added to the adhesive, the joints become brittle and may crack even under minor impact during use.

To prevent quartz stone from cracking, you should take the following precautions:

To ensure the quality of countertop installation, please pay attention to the following points before installation:

1. When designing the layout of stone‑quartz panels, consider their physical properties to prevent joint cracking caused by thermal expansion and contraction or stress concentration. When selecting joint locations, carefully account for the load-bearing behavior of the slabs, and avoid joints at corners or near furnace openings.

2. When designing countertop corners, stress concentrations must be carefully considered to prevent cracking at the corners; therefore, during fabrication, all corners should be chamfered with a radius of at least 25 mm.

3. When designing hole locations, ensure that each opening is at least 80 mm from the edge of the countertop to prevent cracking; the corners of the openings should have rounded edges with a radius of no less than 25 mm.

4. During countertop installation, a 2–4 mm expansion gap should be left between the countertop and the wall to effectively prevent cracking caused by thermal expansion and contraction. The countertop should be positioned no more than 600 mm away from the support frame or support panel to minimize deformation or even breakage.

5. During everyday use, also avoid cracks caused by external factors—for example, do not strike the quartz countertop with force, and do not place extremely hot pots or cookware directly on the surface; instead, use a heat‑resistant mat.
